Mary Jane Duran
Denver
History/Storytelling
History and drama go hand in hand, and with a little coaxing, the names that repose statically on the pages of texts can spring to life with all the excitement, humor and disappointment that life offers each of us. Mary Jane Duran, M.A. Speech Communication, draws from over 20 years of acting, speaking and teaching to give voice to remarkable people whose lives were not so unlike ours, lives of responding to challenges, making decisions and being responsible for outcomes. Residency students are encouraged to explore personal expression, to discover the what ifs of life, to find their own voice in the process. Using the lives of historic characters as inspiration, students are empowered to reach for their own answers, using critical thinking processes necessary for original thought. Residencies are lively, provocative, interactive and integrate language acquisition, presentation skills and the humanities to the teachers specifications in an exciting way. Mary Jane performs her historic programs throughout the country, including one-woman theater on the life of Augusta Tabor during the summer in Leadville, Colorado. She has written and produced several heritage events for Four Mile Historic Park in Denver. She is co-author of a college study skills text and a career workbook, and believes the positive experience of education can set students on a path to lifelong learning.
