African Drumming
Bob Hall has worked with Young Audience for the past fourteen years. Bob has been studying and performing various traditional drumming styles for almost thirty years. He has studied in the West African countries of Senegal, Guinea, and Ghana with the National ensembles indigenous to each country. A few of his teachers include: Dom Gueye of Senegal, Ousman Sylla and Mamady Keita (THE most famous djembefola in the world) from Guinea and Aboubakari Luna and Abdoulaye Siedu (talking drum masters) from Northern Ghana. He has also studied with Los Munequintos de Matanzas (the world-renowned Afro-Cuban folklorical ensemble from Cuba. Bob recognizes the value of traditional drumming as a great leaning tool for students. All school subjects are inherent when studying traditional drumming: counting and adding beats, realizing the organization of natural materials to create dynamic sounds, discovering the use of phrasing, punctuation and expression, learning about people on the other side of the planet and getting great physical and mental exercise. Drumming also enhances memory skills through working with patterns, identifying sounds; it also enhances motor skills, the thought process and teamwork. It is great fun without the stress of realizing the intense work involved.
