John Stansfield

Storytelling

Good Men, Good Women and Children of the West

John Stansfield recounts historically accurate stories of remarkable men, women, and children of great character and their experiences in the American West: American Indians, pioneer settlers, conservationists, and writers. Students will also meet Enos Mills: Rocky Mountain Naturalist, Colorado explorer, writer and national park pioneer - in the first person. This program is presented in historical costume and meets Colorado Model Content Standards for History.

Fantastic Folklore

Multicultural stories galore from around the world!  Folktales, fairytales, myths, legends, tall tales, cuentos in English and Spanish:  all celebrate the wit, beauty, and wisdom of our folklore heritage.  The “Gifts of the Fire-Bringer” program highlights energy, mythology, conservation, and science.  Promoting the values of oral literacy, these programs meet Colorado Model Content Standards for Reading, Writing, and Geography.

Literature Aloud!

Choose from several programs, each designed to promote literacy and a love of literature: Award-winning stories and classics from children and young adult literature, Wildtale stories of wildlife, wilderness adventure, survival, ballad-spinning storytelling poems, a capella ballads. All these stories meet the Colorado Model Content Standards for Reading and Writing.

Workshop: Writing Like A Storyteller

This 60-75 minute workshop is available for up to 30 students. The process of creating and composing effective writing is highlighted through techniques of storytelling, group discussion, brainstorming, and responsive writing. Presented by the award-winning author of Writers of the American West: Multicultural Learning Encounters and other works, this workshop focuses on the writing traits of ideas, organization, and word choice.

Workshop: Storytelling - The Tell-Tale Art

This 60-120 minute workshop is available for up to 30 students, and involves an introduction to the process of becoming a storyteller and making stories come to life. Instructional techniques include story modeling, brainstorming, personal storytelling, and group discussion. Also offered: A workshop in "History-telling" presenting the basics in researching and preparing good, tellable tales from history.
