Dancing Belly Buttons
This performance is colorful, musical and enriching. This lighthearted and informational performance can be suited to all ages. Students experience the Zeffa, Zar, Kashlimar, Greek line dance, Raks Sharki and all their cultural ties are explained. Props for each dance may include a balancing sword, spoons and zills. Everybody gets an informal lesson and some may actually get to perform with the dancer on stage! Rooshana will then answer questions at the end of the performance. The costuming is eye-catching and typical of Belly Dance; however, a one-piece folk costume may be requested. Hula and Tahitian Dance Dancer Rooshana will perform several Hulas wearing a traditional pareau and ruffle top, and Tahitian Dance in a grass skirt and Tahitian helmet. The audience will be asked to imitate the poetic hand gestures that tell the story of the Hula, and shake percussion instruments to accompany the Tahitian Dance. Both boys and girls will be encouraged to participate in this dance that honors nature, ancestors and loved ones. The boys will have a chance to do a warrior dance using steps such as the “frigate bird” hopping step, and the girls will have the chance to wear a sarong and dance the “Hukulau”, a song about fishing. Workshop: Middle Eastern Dance- A Magic Carpet Ride for Dancers Watch as professional Belly Dancer, Rooshana, dressed in a colorful, sparkly costume performs a variety of dances from the Middle Eastern region such as, Zar, Zeffa, Beladi, or Kashimar, then you get to learn the moves! How does she make her belly move like that? You will learn some secrets from this array of ancient dance forms. Learn “snake arms”, “camel walk” and more. This workshop contains age-appropriate costumes and is great for all ages. This workshop is 45-50 minutes in length and is available to up to 16 students. Workshop: Hula and Tahitian Dance Professional dancer, Rooshana Juergens, dressed in traditional floral paraeu, will perform four exciting hula dances, then wear a tall raffia “helmet” and grass skirt for a traditional Tahitian Dance. Students will have the opportunity to learn the Hukulau and Pearly Shells dance using provided polished rocks for “clicking” together. The boys will learn the “warrior” dance where they will be encouraged to beat their chest and stick out their tongues to look “fierce”! Lastly, the children will perform in groups, as they mirrior the instructor. This workshop is 45-50 minutes in length and is available for up to 16 students.
