Visiting Artist! Dan Egger-Belandria World Rhythm Synergy
Senor Gato Senor Gato is a quartet that represents the rich heritage of Latin American and Caribbean music. Both educational and entertaining, Senor Gato presents each song as a tribute to a particular country or style, ranging from Cuban son to Brazilian samba to bolero from Mexico. Band leader/percussionist Dan Egger-Belandria can address the audience in Spanish and English to help bridge the connection among the Americas while integrating volunteer students into the performance. Instrumentation includes percussion, piano, bass, and saxophone.
Workshop: Conga Drumming for Latin American Music Using six conga drums, Dan Egger-Belandria teaches students about the history of the drum and how to play in the tradition of Latin American music. There will be a focus on proper hand technique, different sounds and one or two specific rhythms. This workshop can be facilitated in English and/or Spanish for up to 18 students.
Workshop: Clave Clapping and Salsa Dance Steps Using recorded music and the clave (a Latin music percussion instrument), Dan will teach students about the polyrhythms and syncopation characteristic in “salsa” music. Students will learn the concept and specific rhythm of the clave and then will reinforce their newfound knowledge through using counter rhythms in the form of basic salsa steps. This is a challenging rhythmical workshop that involves more than one medium and can be facilitated in English and/or Spanish for up to 50 students.
Workshop: Percussion Ensemble Playing Using a variety of percussion instruments, Dan will show students how to create percussion-based music with percussion instruments and creativity! Students will be introduced to the instruments and demonstrate how they are played. Gradually an ensemble will be assembled with each student using a designated instrument. Musical concepts such as tempo, dynamics, motifs, soloing and musical intercommunication will all be discussed. Overall, this workshop is an interactive experience that reinforces basic music theory. This workshop can be facilitated in English and/or Spanish for up to 10 students.
