Leading the state in Arts Education

Dance studio leads “Thriller” dance on Denver’s 16th Street Mall and raises money for arts education

Vicky Fields Dance, Inc. and DanzArtz Studios, a 21st-century dance studio, offered a series of group classes for (adults and children?) to learn the choreography from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and perform in zombie costumes on Denver 16th Street Mall on Halloween weekend 2009.

Ten percent of the proceeds from the Thriller tribute/fundraiser were donated to Think 360 Arts, a Denver-based nonprofit organization dedicated to keeping the arts in the schools.

“Dance, music, theater, and art are critical to the well-rounded development of children,” said Vicky Fields-Forero. “The arts can expand a person’s creativity, comfort in being in front of a crowd, and overall sensibilities…that’s why we’re supporting one of Colorado’s leading non-profits that helps keep arts in our schools.”

About 240 dancers performed the infamous dance at Skyline Park in downtown Denver during Halloween celebrations on October 30 and 31. Every dancer took part in a four-week choreography session to learn the complicated dance moves.

“We’ve broken the choreography down into digestible sections, and people really can learn it in 4 weeks,” said Vicky Fields-Forero, of Vicky Fields Dance and co-owner of DanzArtz Studios. “We’re encouraging people of all ages to come learn to dance Thriller, and then dress in costume and perform it.”

“Thriller dance classes have been in full swing since August 2009, and people are having a great time,” said Ms. Fields-Forero. “When they learn a key Thriller dance sequence in one hour and can actually dance it, there are a lot of smiles in the room – particularly when we teach the zombie walk.”

The project, nicknamed “Guerilla Thrilla,” is slated to continue for several Halloweens to come. The 2010 performance is already in development with plans to add an Addams Family routine.
