I have been in Education for over thirty years. During my career I was an Elemenary art educator and was named Colorado Art Educator of the year in 1989. I am a retired educator and school administrator from Summit County. I am involved in promoting the Arts in our schools and coordinate school programs for Music in our Schools. I am involved in the Arts District in Breckenridge and teach classes in our historical buildings. I also am involved in the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance and teach art/ history lessons of famous people and events in our county for elemenatry school children. As a faculty for the University of Phoenix teacher education program, the class I teach the most to teachers is " Integrating the Arts".
I am co- author of the book Pictures and Poetry, Davis Publications. We focus on several multicultural artists and poets and show activities that can be done explaining the artist/poet style of work. I work with teachers and schools groups presenting artist/oet and having kids create their own peice of art.
Tell us how you feel about arts education
The arts help students to be global learners and see the connections and similarities in all cultures. This is the basis that I support when teaching art classes and project designs in various school and community classes. The arts can help students become team-oriented problem solvers who are confident and able to think creatively. These qualities can be especially important in improving learning and promote community involvement in school populations that are diverse. In the last several years educational leaders have confirmed that arts education is part of the core curriculum and is vital to a complete and quality education for all children. In the classes that I teach in schools and communities I show students how what they are learning about an artist, the artist style and the medium used can connect to the real world and can be seen in other subject areas they are learning about. Each fun-filled integrated lesson will help develop skills that require creativity, perseverance, and problem solving combined with working well in team learning environment that enhances children’s development skills.
One of my goals when teaching classes in school and community settings is showing students that combining poetry with famous paintings is the perfect way to see the beauty in both art forms.
