Artist in Residence
Hip-Hop dance has been around since the 70’s and has been seen in movies like "Saturday Night Fever" and "Flash Dance" and on TV with stars like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Usher, and N'Sync. Ricki Harada started his dance career in his native Japan in 1985 with the funky jazz group "New York Jets.” He toured Japan extensively and danced with MTV dancers. He is now a resident of Denver and the leader and choreographer of the hip-hop dance group "Street Jam.” Ricki's classes cover basic hip-hop steps through specific hip-hop techniques like "popping" and floor moves like back spins. Kids who never thought they could dance learn to move with Ricki, and they love it.
Educational Performances
Hip-Hop a La Carte
Hip-hop brings together many movement traditions from Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Middle East. Ricki and his colleagues explore the roots of hip-hop, and each dancer demonstrates his own specialized free style. The dancers get students on their feet to learn the moves and participate in the grand finale that celebrates today’s hip-hop culture.
