Artist in Residence
Bob Hall has worked with Think 360 Arts/Young Audiences for the past fourteen years and has been studying and performing various traditional drumming styles for almost thirty years. He has studied in the West African countries of Senegal, Guinea, and Ghana with the national ensembles indigenous to each country. A few of his teachers include: Dom Gueye of Senegal, Ousman Sylla and Mamady Keita (THE most famous djembefola in the world) from Guinea and Aboubakari Luna and Abdoulaye Siedu (talking drum masters) from Northern Ghana. He has also studied with Los Munequintos de Matanzas, the world-renowned Afro-Cuban folkloric ensemble from Cuba. Bob recognizes the value of traditional drumming as a great leaning tool for students. Inherent in traditional drumming are lessons in counting and adding beats, organizing natural materials to create dynamic sounds, discovering the use of phrasing, punctuation and expression, learning about people on the other side of the planet and getting great physical and mental exercise. Drumming also enhances memory and motor skills, as well as encourages teamwork and imaginative thinking. Students have so much fun, they don’t realize how intensely they’re working!
